Identification Requirements

Notarization requires the notary to identify the signer using satisfactory evidence. What is meant by ‘satisfactory evidence’? The state of Nevada has a list of what documents may be used by the notary to identify the signer. Keep in mind that a Notary Public has the right to ask for more than one identifying ID, until satisfied you are who you say you are.

Acceptable documents are: ID with both a photo and signaturepile of ID cards

Nevada - Driver’s License or State ID card

Any other USA state-issued Driver’s License or State ID card

Military ID card, as long as the card shows a photo, and signature.

For those persons who are 65 years of age or older and cannot satisfy the requirements above; they can use an identification card issued by a governmental agency or a senior citizen center.

Keep in mind that even though Nevada law does not address expired identification for notarization purposes, the entity that needs the notarized document back may. If your ID is expired please check with them before making an appointment.

Documents that can NOT be used:

What to do if you don’t have any of the documents listed? A credible witness known to both the signer and the notary can be used, and will swear/affirm that the signer of a document is the person whom he or she claims to be; and has photo ID.
